I did the Ct emissions for the last couple of years at my shop... and if u have ur CEL on and ur car is 96 and newer (OBDII) test it will fail automatically but what u can do is unplug ur battery and let it sit unpluged for like 5 mins and re-connect it and go straight 2 the test center and run the test, what'll happen is the emission machine will not be able 2 read the OBD bc all ur readyness codes havent gone thru the drive cycle and then the Test Center SHOULD run the ASM (SNIFFER) test, and what that is, is a test where the Test Center will strap down ur car and puts it on the dyno and drive it at 25mph and check the exhaust outflow... For cars 95 and older it DOESNT MATTER if the CEL is on b/c the ASM test doesnt read the cars computer... But dont think that u can be smart and take the CEL light out of the dash either bc if they go to run the OBDII test one of the things the computer asks is if the CEL comes on when the battery is on and then it has to go off when the car is turned on.... Hope this helps

RLA_DC5 does the cat converter have to be present when doin the asm testin??? Cause i just replaced my with a skunk 2 racin test pipe, which was my only option at the time.

It suppose to be and the computer will ask the person doing the test to check for the cat... but most places dont bother checking... but with no cat ur chances to fail increase a lot.... and to be honest when i worked at my shop the only time i checked for the cat when the DMV inspector was there... i really dont know what'll happen if they click "no" on the computer about the cat

ive seen cars come in with exhaust all the time and pass no problem... if ur worried about failing there is a thing that u can buy at advance auto that u add to ur gas tank and its suppose to make u pass.... but make sure when u go 4 the test that ur car is warmed up

My friend has done a similiar thing, he was running a test pipe and took out the check engine light. He disconnected his battery right before he went to the test place and ran his car hard for 20 mintures untill his cat was all hot up. And than he went and did his emissions test and passed with flying colors, iunno how he did it but he sure did passed! And he did the test at Federal towing btw.
