Sounds like the 2 bolts that hold the linkage to the underside of the car arnt there and ur shifter is just floating around ontop of your exhaust. It shouldnt mess up your clutch at all but im sure its a pain in the ass to shift. Or the bolts are there but the rubber bushing isnt so its all loose pretty easy to fix if thats your problem just 2 12mm bolts jack up the car and check it out.

i dont see what he would need to weld everything on the assembly is bolts. unless the two bolts that hold the shift linkage plate to the shifter broke but in that case ud just need new bolts. if its not the two bolts that hold the big bushing on the end of the linkage the only other thing it could be are the two bolts going between the linkage plate and the shifter (sorry kinda hard to explain) to replace those bolts u will have to take the whole assembly down and replace whatever bolts are broken. i just replaced those bolts on my ek cuz they where all rusted and one just broke off.

What he said but also if the shifter pin isn't in between the linkage and trans can cause a sloppy shifter

Sounds like a shifter bushing but i think maybe the metal bracket that goes on the rubber bushing that the 2 12s go thru to hold the linkage in place may be missing. Ive done plenty of auto to manual swaps no issue
