A/C help?

So i bought a car with the a/c and powersteering ripped out. the person that owned it just completely messed up the engine swap overall, but my mechanic said it would cost like 2 grand just to get the a/c back.....for 2 grand I could put central air in my house. i'm calling bullshit on my mechanic's end. what does it really cost for a/c?

then again, I have a nissan so I wouldn't want your a/c unless it fit in my car. ^^^
