Air filter subsitute?

So i bought a car recently and the previous owner gave me the air filter tube...but no air filter... so until I order one what should I use? I was thinking a cheese cloth and duck tape it around it. the material is durable and it is usually used for filtering fine particals, such as sand etc. would that be best as a subsitute until I actually order an air filter?
