  • Headgasket help???

my car overheated and now my coolant is mixing with my oil. so im gonna b changing the headgasket tomorrow. now this is my first time doing this and i wanted any advice anyone one has. Its a bone stock 88 civic. I have the chiltons manual and my boy said its pretty simple jus disconnect everything on the head and chage the gasket. Ive done swaps before so im good wit a wrench but ive jus never done a headgasket. sooo i started today and got some questions. do i have to take off the intake manifold and distributor or can i leave em on?? ill update wit any more questions i could think of.

ps this sucks when ur on crutches and have to keep hoppin around. lol

On D-Series cars, I leave everything attached (Intake Mani, Exhaust Mani, Dizzy, & All that) Pull the head off, & replace the gasket. Pretty Easy. You can pull everything off, but thats just more work.

try to get someone to give you a hand, to lift the head its a little heavy with everything attached to it but something very simple... make sure you put your crank and head on the timing marks and that baby should start right up with out a problem + no more mixing... good luck!!!!!!!!

thanx and this may b a dumb question but im still learnin :D. Isnt the exhaust manifold gonna hold it down?? Thats in the front rite and it goes down and connects to the exhaust?? so would that keep it from coming off??

Well, you would disconnect the A-pipe/Down pipe from the Manifold. It's 3 14mm nuts.

Well said H23. I did a head gasket change on my bros car and a 2nd hand is always helpful. My bros car was burning coolant and you can smell it.
