  • need help with axles and springs

wut up, ive been into car audio for the longest now i want to learn more about racing the only problem is that i know zero about mechanics but im a fast learner. anyway, i recently bought this 91 civic, it needs new axles and new springs. i can only do one at a time bcuz money is tight right now. my question is how hard is it to change the axles and where could i get a decent pair of lowering springs that wont cost an arm and a leg? it looks like the springs that were put on the car were cut and they didnt even put the sleeves on. the car is too low and rubs like crazy!

Axles are really easy man. heres a step by step.

                  1. take the wheel off

                  2. GEt yourself these tools. 18mm socket and wrench, 17 mm socket and wrench, 32mm socket with breaker bar, (try to get a pickle fork for the lower ball joint or just use a longggg pry bar and a slegde hammer), wire cutters , and a 10mm just uin case

                  3. Break the axle nut loose but dotn take it fully off.

                  4. On the lower control arum where the strut is bolted in, Use the 17mm wrench on the left side of it and the socket on the right and take the long bolt holding the strut on out. (a tip to getting the long bolt to slide out is to get the bolt head out enough to slide a wrench in there and put the wrench on the shaft and use the socket and push the wrench to pull the bolt out)

                  5. take the wire cutters and pull the cotter pin out of the LOWER ball joint.

                  6. Use the 18mm socket to get the LOWER ball joint nut off. (some cars may have 17MM ball joint bolts so just double cheack it, and use the wrench if u cant get enough room with the socket)

                  7. Use the pickle fork to separate the ball joint if you have one, If not, Use a pry bar press it against the subframe of the car and pull down as someone hits the lower control arm near the lower ball joint with a hammer (DO NOT HIT THE THREADS ON THE BALL JOINT) After a littlwe ball breaking it will eventually break free.

                  8. Take the axle nut off now and slide the spindle off to the side (make sure that when u started this project you kept the key in the ignition so the steering wheel can be turned)

                  9. Once you move the spindle you will be able to get the axle out of the hub.

                  10. Use a pry bar and go to where the axle sits into the transmission and pry it out (make sure you have the male end on the hub out of the hub) One you get it out of the transmission, Pull down on the lower control arm and slide the axle out.

                  11. To put the new axle in make sure that when u look at the spline on the end that goes in the tranny that the little ring is facing down (theres an opening. That needs to be facing down)

                  12. Put it all back together the way it came out ( it will break ur balls a little going in so u can tap the head with a hammer to get it in just do not hit the threads (you can even use the strut bolt.. the long one .. And put it in the center of the axle there will b a dimple and hit the bolt head until the axle is fully into the transmission.

                  13. Make sure you put a new coter pin or reuse the older one back int othe ball joint you dont want your wheel falling offo n the highway.

Thats all it takes to do the axle. You have an EF so u may need to disconnect the track bars from your lower control arms as well. Those will be a 17mm as well...

Pm me if youh ave any questions .. and good luck!
