While were on the topic, its not a bad idea to know the long hand version.
To find a tires overall diameter, do the following.
Ex1: 275/40/R17
275 = tire width in mm. Must convert it to inches.
275 / 25.4 = 10.8
10.8 is how wide the tire is. Multiply this by the profile percentage.... in this case 40. Convert it to a percentage aka put a decimal in front.
10.8 x 0.40 = 4.32
4.32 = the sidewall height in inches. Since there is sections of sidewall, multiply that by 2.
4.32 x 2 = 8.64
8.64 is the total sidewall height.
Now add the wheel size.
8.64 + 17 = 25.64.
This tire assembly will be 25.64 Inches tall.
I have highlighted like measurements for your viewing pleasure.
Hope this makes sense!
This calculation has been particularly useful for measuring wheel/tire combos for sensitive awd setups and cars with TCS to worry about! Especially cars with staggered fitments!Last edited by *infamous*; 06-29-2010, 08:40 PM.
