  • Shaving bay Tech question?

Never shaved a bay but know im fully capable. Only thing i cant find much online about is the seams that they blob with hondabond.

I have been told this is just to keep out water dirt moisture etc and even after sanding the seam it is still technically filled and the the hondabond is still doing its job. I wanna know will smoothing out the hondabond down to the seam jeopardize the structual integrity/rigidness of my engine bay? i know the seam is beaded from the back also and i know there tac welded but just cant find out for sure!

Will i have to lay something else after? My own smooth coat of hondabond? or nothing? just smooth and prime? I do not want it to crack ive seen people use filler and end up cracking

    thank u

Seam sealer.. Yes u can grind it down. Some ppl stich weld it to be on the safe side..Some Ppl don't. Once it's ground down it won't do it's job anymore because u took it off. The purpose for a seam slealer is to protect the overlap of 2 metals sonthat it won't rust and fuck up the spot welds and keep the two metals from separating..

i melted mine out and welded the seam and ground it smooth for the bath tub look if you dont wana do that i would still get rid of it and redo it but smoother. to get it smooth use the calk style on take your time and make it neat then take an acid brush with some paint thinner on it and brush what you just put on to make it smoother.

best way to get it out is melt it and a wire brush. Are you painting bay???

hey whats good fro its justin i had the big 4x4 ford van. ya man im harness/brake tuck and shaving everything myself. then having someone respray. I was going to use my die grinder to remove all the sealer. i tested a area and it was fairly easy just gotta wear a mask i suppose. idk abt doin all the welds then id have to tow it somewheres to get it done cuz my garage doesnt have 220. so after applying the new sealer and letting it dry then you would sand smooth correct.

2035786213 call me sometime at your convenience maybe go over this a bit better. i wanna do it once and do it right thanks brotha

Here is a picture of what I did, I took my Snap-on Crud Thug and used it to remove the sealer and get down to the bare metal. I then had the entire bay stitch welded to make it stronger, this was done with a Miller mig welder.

Finally the weld was sanded down as smooth as possible without decreasing strength. A think coat of seam sealer was put on to prevent rust, the way we did this was using painters tape to control where the seam sealer went. That leaves you with nice sharp lines.

Here is where I started the pictures are in order:
