  • CBR600 Quad with no spark

So I picked this thing up real cheap in NY on Monday. It's an 89 CBR600 that somebody basically welded a quad front end on and stretched the hell out of. It's not perfect but somebody did a lot of custom work on this thing. Ive just been dying to get it running.

Figured I'd throw it on here maybe somebody had one of these bikes with a similar issue. Mechanically speaking its a CBR600. The motorcycle frame and harness was used just has a Honda quad front end and the swing arm modified.

I have the manaul for it and went through the diagnostic tree. I figured it was just going to be a bad coil. So I had a friend that had one of these and still had his old coils when he parted out the bike. Changed the coils still no spark. However I have signal/power at the coil.

If I'm looking at this all correctly the spark signal starts at the pulse generator, I checked that with an ohmmeter and the resistance is within spec. Then the pulse generator sends the signal to the CDI box which also checked out fine. Then the signal is sent to the coils. So I have signal at the coils, and the two different sets I have tested fine. But why am I not getting spark out if the coil. This is where I get lost because all the wiring and parts seem fine up to this point and would have to be for me to have signal at the coil.

I have checked both primary and secondary coil resistance. Swapped spark plug wires.

Wiring is not my expertise but I started checking wires for continuity. I figure I've got to have a break somewhere in a wire but I dunno where if the signal is getting to the coil. If it had a short I'd expect to see blown fuses.

I've got a freshly charged battery hooked up with 12 volts and it cranks over great just no spark on all cylinders.

The other thing I'm not too sure about is it has an electric fuel pump that has been wired up on a switch. The pump is factory and supply's more fuel for higher rpm operation. So is this supposed to run all the time?

I bought this from a recycling center/junk yard that really didnt know much about it. I wish I could find the guy who built it and ask some questions.

The guy had taken the plug for the kickstand kill and cut two of the wires and soldered them together so that's constantly sending a signal that its up. I haven't looked into the low oil kill though.

Sucks cause I have a CDI box from an 87 but they didnt use the kickstand kill or neutral switch on that year so the box is different.

the CDI box wouldnt have those kills built in. But you def. need a cdi from a simialr year motor
