WEST HAVEN >>
Police have made three arrests in connection with 44 car thefts over the course of 90 days, department spokesman Sgt. David Tammaro said in a release Wednesday.
The arrested individuals, who call themselves the “Get Money Boyz,” are accused of targeting Hondas, with model years between 1991 to 1998, located in the downtown area of town, Tammaro said. The thefts occurred from November 2013 to January 2014.
After a nearly 3-monthlong investigation, Tammaro said a warrant was issued for the arrests of Gilberto Rodriguez, 25, and Juan Serrano, 25, of New Haven, as well as Daniel Avery, 20, of West Haven.
“Information was developed that there was this group of individuals calling themselves the Get Money Boyz and they were bragging about how they would take these cars and that’s what led to this group and this arrest,” Tammaro said.
The suspects were already in lock up on unrelated charges when the warrants were severed March 27, Tammaro said.
Police are still looking for a fourth suspect. Ethan Maltese, 20, who may be involved with the thefts. Maltese has an active warrant for his arrest.
The investigation was a joint-law enforcement effort between the West Haven and New Haven Police Departments. Tammaro said New Haven became involved after it was discovered that many of the stolen cars were being dumped on Poplar Street. Most of the cars, Tammaro said, were too damaged to returned to the owners.
“I don’t know whose house it was (on Poplar Street),” he said. “But that’s where they were dismantling them and that’s where a lot of parts were found.”
Tammaro said the house an Poplar Street was being used as a “modern day chop shop” where the cars parts were being sold individually on Ebay or scrapped and being sold for cash.
Rodriquez, Serrano and Avery are being charged with a slew of larceny and auto theft charges. Serrano and Avery are scheduled to appear May 1 in Superior Court in Milford while Rodriguez was issued an April 14 court date in New Haven. All three suspects remain in police custody.
