honda civic problem

i have a 1993 honda civic, it has 202k and runs good. i have just encountered a problem which is whenever i drive, in the middle of nowhere, the check engine light comes on and the gas pedal does not work (but it does push in), the engine is on but the rpms go no where and the car just stops. i turn the car off and it stars after a few seconds it has been doing it for the past week and i could have been in accidents. i dont know what the problem is because the check engine light does not come on when i start it again? i was thinking it might be a sensor or the distributor. Any suggestions?
