  • If you have had engine work done get in here!

I am trying to pick where I am going to get my block work done and there are a bunch of threads on here for machine work; soooooo I wanted to get everybody who has had machine work done to give input so we could have some sort of a master "go to this shop for legit work" thread.

Post up what work you had done, a roundabout price, and how you feel the quality of work was.
    My work: Flikr.

I had Center Auto Machine in stratford do a 4g63 block for me a few years back.

They also sourced rings and bearings for me, and machined the wrist pin end of some rods to accept different pistons.

Here's a list of what they did for me:

        cleaned/hot tank/paint block
        new freeze plugs installed
        deck
        hone cylinders
line hone mains (sometimes they become out of round when running ARP hardware)
balance/blueprint entire rotating assy from flywheel to crank pulley
        ACL bearings
        Mitsu Rings
        Machine Rods
Assemble Pistons/Rods, put rings on rods

I paid $700 for the machine work, with about a week turn around time. I was very happy with the work.

For my head: Service Auto in Ansonia
        clean, hot tank
        pressure check
        deck
        5 angle valve job
assemble valvetrain ( i brought them a stock evo valvetrain in a box)

        $150

I bought all the ARP hardware, valve seals, lifters, etc. on my own and assembled the entire motor myself, so I saved some cost there.

After being together for 150 miles (I beat the SHIT out of motors on break in to seat rings properly), the car, with 8.5:1 compression, made 175PSI across the board.

The motor made over 400whp, went numerous 11 sec passes, and has since been through three different owners. It still runs strong for the current owner, with just under 30k on it since the rebuild. Great sense of accomplishment.

Sorry for the long post, just my experiences with the machine shops I dealt with.

RPE Machine in Hartford,CT - Known for building the worlds fastest Grand National engines in the U.S.

As for the others that mentioned a machine shop in East Hartford.. I've personally seen the machine work that comes out of there as well the lack of care and cleanliness of the motors. Wouldn't bring anything there even if it was for free.
