Police arrested three people early Sunday morning after interrupting a street race on the Route 40 connector.
Police say that more than 50 vehicles were blocking the eastbound portion of the highway when they arrived around 12:45 a.m. As police approached, most of the vehicles drove away at high speeds.
By placing stop sticks in the road, police were able to stop one vehicle that was fleeing at approximately 120 miles per hour, according to police. They sticks damaged two of the vehicle's tires and it came to a rest on the Route 40 ramp leading to I-91 southbound.
The driver, Martezz Banks, 19, of New Haven, fled on foot but was soon found in a nearby marsh, according to police.
Banks has been charged with breach of peace, reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without insurance or a license.
He was held with bail set at $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on Oct. 28.
Police were also able to stop another vehicle before it fled. Both occupants, who have not been idenitifed, were charged with breach of peace.
Police said that the street race, which had not yet occurred when they arrived, had drawn people from as far away as New York.
