IMO there is no way to know what is really fucked up till you tear it down. May get lucky and it's just a shot head gasket or the head/block could have warped. It's a gamble, if you really want to get it expect to replace the engine and if it is salvagable then it's a pleasant surprise.

x2 if he drove it overheating could have deff warped head and or block. it is a gamble if u feel its worth it then do it. worst comes to worse swap for another vr and have yourself a nice dub

i am a vw guy but recently bought a dc teggy for a daily.. i had 6 vr's before and you got to have connects to have a dub.. vr's has hydraulic valves and sh*t aint cheap.. i know what car you talkin bout its probably red with gold wheels with a silver lip dont bother.. craigslist will get you nice daily from an old lady like i did..
