talk to me about your budget and then I can give you a good recommendation.....

    Sony Eats battery like nothing..

Nikon, unless you get a real expensive one, they are pretty good, until you start to look for details in a pic

Olympus and Canon are my top choices, but model number depends on how much you are willing to spends...

        Pro:
        Optically stabilized kit lens
        10Megapixel
        Photos have accurate exposure
low noise levels, and minimal purple fringing
        Convenient onscreen user interface
Compatible with a wide variety of lenses and accessories.
Large, bright, and sharp 2.5" LCD
Shooting data well presented on the main LCD
        Full manual controls
        Speedy performance in most areas
        Good continuous shooting mode
Effective (but slow) Active D-Lighting feature; In-camera RAW editing
Dedicated AF-assist lamp; Redeye not a problem
Useful features for Beginners like D-Lighting, redeye removal, assist images, help system

        Cons:
        Images are oversaturated
Missing some features offered by competitive cameras: bracketing, DOF preview, live view, more than 3 focus points
        Viewfinder on the small side
        No battery grip available
Flimsy door over memory card slot
        Video cable not included
        AC adapter is way overpriced

Basically, for a starter SLR camera, it's good, but the accessories are
too expensive for a camera that goes for $500-$600

For this kind of money, get the CANON REBEL XS, which addresses most of the issues with Nikon, and it's about $100 cheaper.

IMO the first thing you need to do is go to a camera store and pick up some different camera's. If you don't you may regret it later when you use your friends (insert camera brand here) and discover you like the way it works better and you could have bought that instead. I prefer Nikon but that is mainly due camera ergonomics (really don't care for how to adjust aperture and ISO with a cannon). From all of the research I have done Nikon and Canon are equal quality, Nikon's you can use their very first lens with a dslr body whereas you can not with Canon. Canon has some great lenses on the other hand. It is really a give and take between the two...and for the price I recommend you look at some used kit's, check these guys out after you figure out what you want to get: http://www.keh.com/ They have some very good prices. I feel the Sony Alpha's and Olympus' camera's don't have as good a quality but are a solid 3rd and 4th pick.
