  • "Friendly" Emissions Centers?

    Does anybody know of any friendly emissions techs? I failed four times already for high Nox and my registration is about to expire soon. DMV won't renew it until the car passes emissions. I've spent over $700 on parts trying to pass the right way, tried the alcohol in the gas tank trick, made sure the cats were hot, richened the fuel, advanced timing; nothing worked. I can't apply for the waiver because I have a JDM head so there is no EGR; when you apply for the waiver they send someone over to make sure the car has all of the emissions parts intact. At this point I don't know what else to do cause I've done all the tricks.

      did u fix ur car in a certified shop ?f not u cant aplly for a weiver
      and when dmv sends an inpector they dont check anything

        try leaning it out if you made it rich, do you have an air fuel wideband to check a/f at 3rd gear at 25 mph around 3000rpm to 2500

          I did not have the cats and custom made downpipe put on by a certified shop, but I don't have a problem spending another $700 having a certified shop do whatever just to get the waiver. The only reason I didn't go to a certified shop is that there is nothing they can do to actually get this car to pass, there is too much custom work on this car for the usual place to even know what to do first. I know this car will not pass a real inspection because it does not have the stock cats, and there is no way the stock downpipe/cat will fit back on with the turbo setup. Also, it has a JDM motor so there is no EGR. I was thinking that with those 2 things missing, and the DMV sending someone over to look the car over that it wouldn't qualify for a waiver. Are you sure the DMV doesn't look it over, the website makes it sound that all the emissions parts needs to be there

          Leaning it out will actually cause NOx to go up higher.

            if i was u ill do the waiver because from what i remember dmv only sends inspectors if the costumers feel that the tech is not doing the test right and they contact dmv...
            and the weivers i think u only have to show papers

              That's probably the best way to keep the car registered. I hate the idea of having someone else work on the car, specially for something that I'm going to have to "fix" after they're done with it. I'd rather have them keep the $660 and not do anything to the car. Thanks for the help everyone.

                All of the above is incorrect...........DMV will not try to send someone out in most cases, but if they even get a wiff that you have modified your engine, expecially making it turbo, they will send someone out.................put ur fuel pressure at 20lbs, and put in brand new spark plugs..........I had a friend do this and his turbo integra passed...

                  which of the obove is incorrect???
                  ive tested a jeep with a v8 swap, it keepd failing for the gas cap so the guy feelt that the machine was bad and call dmv.... a dmv inspector showed up and did the test
                  and dint say anything about the v8 swap

                    I was in a similar position...there are 3 types of waivers

                    Failing a Re-test
                    Waiver Eligibility

                    There are three types of emissions waivers.

                    Cost - To qualify for a cost waiver, you must spend at least $660 on emission-related repairs performed by a Certified Emissions Repair Technician. This figure is linked to the consumer price index and could change annually. The minimum repair cost is for actual repairs made to the vehicle by a certified emission repair technician, after available emissions-related warranty coverage or written denial of such warranty coverage by the vehicle manufacturer. You must have a receipt for the repairs from a Certified Emissions Repair Technician. A written estimate of costs is not sufficient.
                    Economic Hardship
                    You must submit documentation to the DMV stating that your annual income is at or below state and federal poverty level guidelines.
                    Asset status - You must attest that you have no other assets you could use to pay for the necessary repairs. All information shall remain confidential.
                    After having received an economic hardship waiver, a vehicle must pass its next scheduled test before becoming eligible for another such waiver.
                    Functional Diagnosis - You may apply for a diagnostic waiver if diagnosis fails to reveal any problem or there is no evidence to suggest emissions repairs are needed. Your vehicle will then require a functional diagnosis and inspection performed by DMV personnel. You may be granted this type of waiver if the DMV inspector validates that no additional repairs are required.


                    I was trying to apply for the functional diagnosis waiver, but when I spoke with the inspector over the phone he emphasized that all emissions equipment that came stock on the car must be on it. so I couldn't do that.
