So now GM announced that they will phase out the Pontiac Brand.....Honestly is a sad day for the automotive world, that brand has been around for ages and it's one of the original "old school" back in the day...

I agree it does suck that one of the O.G. car manufacturers is going under, but thats what happens when you sell weak/poor products. GM should have addressed the Recession issue along time ago, they may have been able to keep the Pontiac name plate.

For example: Honda is by no means hurting from the recession(Sales are down like everyone else), but they are still doing much better than most, mostly due to the fact that they announced the halt of ALL Ridgeline & Pilot prodcution, so they dont fall into the same boat.

The bottom line is: Honda has good business practices, where GM obvioulsy did not.

Looks like everybody who has received bailout and T.A.R.P. fund money from Obama (us taxpayers) is going under! Anyone remember the big show they put on when Obama visited Caterpillar? He promised re-hires for the people who lost their jobs at Cat once the stimulus package was passed. They recently announced more layoffs. AIG is going down too.

GM is tied down with benefit payouts to employees and retirees, and taking the bailout really sealed Pontiac's fate. Poor management didn't help them either. In light of Pontiac's demise, you have to give Ford credit for not taking the bailout money.

Im not against American cars. I own a 84 SS.

The assembly line was a great invention but it lead to having to pay alot of money into workers and retirement for alot of people. Thats a major issue to overcome.

Look through the years of cars, GM had all these Sub-brands, Yea it worked in the early years when there weren't many other choices than American cars. Look at Chevy, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, And all the other Major brands that had sub company's. Did we really think they could all survive. When you look at the American cars offered by the company's above they were like the same platforms but for people that wanted to spend more money for a Caddy over on Olds.

Clearly it's not just me, I don't see any new appealing DD's coming out of the BIG 3. Specialty cars and Muscle cars aren't going to save the BIG 3.

All the old people that bought a new Buick regal or Caddy every 2 years are dying off. You have a new generation of people looking at cars alot differently than the past. The BIG 3 did not seem to care about this or do enough about it and dug themselves in a hole.

There are a lot of reasons if you think about them all. The president of GM once said in the 1970s, "Americans will buy our cars, no matter we make." Pretty arrogant!

I'm surprised it was Pontiac that went out and not Buick... they have made very little effort to attract younger buyers. I guess they just assume there will always be old people that want to buy a couch on wheels.

pontiac was gm's ''fun division'' but now with random fuel price increases and economy meltdowns they need to cut them loose it sucks but hey atleast my firebird will rise in value :) i wonder what the fate of vauxhall will be?

i remember i had a pontian grand prix.. like a 94.. had it for 2 weeks and it started givin me problems.. so i junked it..
