I've never rooted myself but I'm pretty sure you should find what you need on one of these sites.

best method to root your phone is unrevoked.com thats how i rooted my evo depends on wat version/kernel your phone is currently on if you havent updated your evo yet you should be good ...then all you need to do is download the cyanogen mod 6 zip file DONT UNZIP IT TILL YOU PUT IT INTO YOUR PHONE .....then go onto boot loader on your phone wich if i remember is power and volume up ..then go into bootloader select the zip file and it will install it ...and bada bing bada boom ..you will be rooted and cyanogen mod installed IMO i didnt like cyanogen mod i kept having foreclosures and stuff so i just kept my phone with the stock rom and rooted its all the same stuff ..good luck i hope i helped

Is unrevoked.com a permanent root though? I was told it would act as an app and run in the background and would have to reopen every start up? I had gotten it mostly done manually and after I flashed the PC36IMG.zip I tried flashing adb shell and it kept saying "file not recognized".. my friend did it on his evo shift with no problems so Idk what I'm doing wrong...

So I downloaded unrevoked3 it same up as reflash.tar.gz and when I try opening it I'm told "file type not found" I am running dolphin browser..is there something I'm missing. I also have file manager installed..

To give everyone a heads up.. DO NOT USE UNREVOKED!!! I tried that method but that is for the old 2.1 system. If you are running 2.2 all it did to my phone was corrupt the PC36IMG.zip file and almost bricked my phone. I had to flash all factory software to correct the problem. So be careful using that root method.

If you root your phone you can always bring in back just create a backup of the NAND file when you go to flash before you boot. Then you can just reflash your original NAND and you'll be all set.
