  • d16y8 turbo or b series swap????

i have a 2000 civic ex with a d16y8 (low miles around 50k). which would be easier to do a b series swap, or just to turbo my d16? this is my daily driver i want something RELIABLE. if i decide to turbo my car it would only be like 6-8psi. i have around 2 grand to spend total, if i did a b series swap it would prob only be a b20 or b18

i was thinking 500 dollars for the ebay turbo kit, 300-500 for tune, and 1000 dollars for misc parts like fuel pump, race bearings, head studs, ob2 - ob1 with p28 ect...

I would go with the turbo because turbo is more fun and faster.

While a B series swap will make you spend almost the same as the turbo and it wont be as fast and fun like the turbo.

Obviously someone who prefers all motor vs turbo it will tell you to go B series.

But I think you might regret of getting a slow B series swap instead of taking advantage of your budget and making your D series turbo.

Besides that there are too many B series in the road while only just a few turbos.

        Apply it!

Go turbo, boost 9lbs with a nice tune,,more fun for you, your motor only got 50k,9lbs is perfect for that motor with no problems...

Sell ur y8 and get like $300 more for a ls swap and boost tha ls...I had both single turbo and ls turbo and tha ls was 10 times better and you'll have a way more reliable motor, y series single cams are trash if ur gonna boost a single get a z6, y blocks get rod knock easy from poor oil pressure

I'd keep the single boost it,buy some new seals for that turbo which commonly go bad after 15k of boost, which is more then enough fun :D

9 lbs should break the tires loose mid-way of 2n

Make sure to get a new oil pump. Even if it's not a high pressure one, a new on would suffice. I'm running stock internals with block guard and new oil pump, 550cc inj and a walbro 255. Pushing 14psi comfortably. Been like that for 7 months now. Daily driven average 200 miles a week. You would love it too. Won't feel much power till vtec engages but when it does you are going to fall in love.

I think 160-180hp for 2grand is waste of money especially boosted....your better off getting a gsr swap for 2grand and have 160hp+allmotor and you be more reliable than with a shity ebay kit

He will be able to do much more than that.

                            He's starting and learning now.

He just need the consultation of the tuner and with a good turbo kit he will crush any stock GSR.

                            Apply it!

The y8 is a very week bottom end because of oiling issues, you're not going to find anyone that knows anything about Honda's recommending boosting it stock. You either need a z6 crank or a z6 bottom end if you want your car to last at all. Ebay kits are okay but the manifolds are cast iron and crack when heated up so you'll either have to get a decent mani or be prepared to re-weld it a few times after it cracks. Also your stock clutch isn't going to last more than a few hard shifts, and thats if it can even hold the power to begin with, so I'd replace that before you go doing any power mods. On the flip side you could have some patience, save up a little more money, get any b series, boost that with the same amount of psi, and make twice as much power without having to do anything to it. Trying to turbo something for cheap isn't usually a good idea but that's a lesson learned in time.
