AWD is just going to make the car slower. You'll have massive amounts of drivetrain loss, handling will be worse than with FWD, its just a bad idea all around.
usually you and i are on the same page- but i gotta disagree on this one.

drivetrain loss between fwd/awd is negligable. back when i worked at a shop with a dyno, we started off with a 2wd dyno. AWD cars would have to drop the transfer case and have a viscous coupling eliminator to be able to dyno.

when we got a second set of rollers, we tested the diff. on the same car, same night, with about 25 minutes between pulls (installing the xfer case and restrapping the car down).

it was less than 10hp difference at the wheels between the two.

now, to the guy wanting to make the car AWD, you got a couple options. cr-v, AWD wagovan, or building a drivetrain yourself. neither honda option can handle a hell of a lot of power, but it's possible and has been done.

everyones always so quick to tell people it cant be done. i know about ten people who could easily build an all wheel drive civic if they wanted one. you just need to have the smart, tools and a creative mind.
                Honda sucks. Over priced junk.

My N/A Impreza with 173 crank HP dyno'd 127HP to the wheels. That was a 46HP loss. 227 crank HP WRX's are lucky to see 180HP at the wheels. These numbers are pretty much common knowledge within the 'tuning' community. My 197 crank HP Honda dyno'd 184 to the wheels.

I'm simply saying that if the car is not being used for something that requires AWD in order to be competitive, its relatively retarded to add it.

One argument people will make is that AWD can put more power down out of a corner, but that is rarely true. You mentioned the viscous coupler type differentials and AWD, so I assume you were referring to an experience with an Impreza or a WRX. Viscous coupler type diffs work no better than an open diff. I would spin the front inside tire on my impreza until the cows came home at the autocross. AWD is usless when the car turns into a 'one legger' in the corners. I can put more power down in my FWD Honda that has an LSD than I can in any AWD car with open diffs.

AWD cars have the worst undertsteer I've ever experienced. When you push a WRX, an STI, or an EVO to its limits, you are fighting the understeer like nothing else. Those cars are not all they're cracked up to be when it comes to handling. Rather, its a myth perpetuated by marketing and ricers that AWD is an 'aid' to handling.

In reality, the key to good handling car is a proper suspension, a proper differential, tires, tires tires- and most imprtantly - the driver modification. If people would learn how to actually drive their cars properly instead of being street racing ricers, people would actually figure out what works and what doesn't as far as 'mods' go. 99% of the cars on this site are set up 100x worse than they were when they left the Honda assemply line.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.
