D16 coil on plug set up

Has anyone made there own coil on plug set up for a d16. My friend want to convert his d16 over but doesnt want to buy the aem set up any info or help.

He replace his Distributor like three times and his first honda. So he really want to do the coil on plug but he doesnt want to spend $800. I was think of getting some 1.7 oem coils and wires and try to Combine them on his car some how. Before i start im trying to do my research before i mess up his car.

stock distributor is good till 600hp anything less your just wasting money buying useless stuff

The coils over heat inside the distributor at high rpm. Get an msd set up and call it a day.
