  • Transmission Engaging In Neutral

Hey guys, need some help. Just swapped over a trans my friend got from craigslist and was wondering if anyone has had this issue before or could diagnose it. We swapped trans in his single cam honda (non vtec) and when we started it up the car begins to drive in neutral like if the gear was engaged. We press the clutch in and it stops of course and we go through gears but it still engages in neutral for some reason. Anyone have any insight? Would appreciate it. Thanks.

I think his car died (the old trans) when it was in 5th gear. So maybe the rods are still in place like if its in 5th gear? Idk no idea. Thanks again.

btw this is all happening on jack stands not while the car is on the ground.

Just tried running through the gears while its on jack stands. 4th gear wont engage and just grinds and 5th gear has some trouble getting into it. Clutch disk was aligned when we were putting the new clutch in not sure if it wouldve moved when we were mounting the transmission. Upon my searching ive read everything from this is normal til the temp of the trans oil gets warmer and that it could be the trans altogether is trash. Anything upon user installation error that would make the gears run through fine except 4th? 5th has a hard time engaging but does engage with persistence.

      *also another update*

Just drove the car around and it goes into gear and drives fine. I go from 3rd to 4th and 4th will not engage at all just grinds. 5th goes in with some work but does drive in 5th. Sounds like a bad trans? All gears go in except 4th. Could this be a linkage issue or just sounds like a bad trans? My friend picked it up from a guy on craigslist who said it came out of a car that was rear ended and had no trans issues.

Put it in the ground when testing if the clutch engages while in neutral the cat will stall out but not if in the air.... make sure you put oil in the tranny
