There is a mount on the passenger side of the car, one on the front of the engine bay, one in back of the engine, and one on the drivers side (under the hood); the first and third attach to the transmission, the second and fourth attach to the engine. Climb under your car (with car on jackstands and ebrake on) and look at the back of the transmission. You will see a rod coming out of it going under the car. That's your shifter linkage, check both ends of that bitch. They should be tight. My work: Flikr.

Does the car have a swap? Cuz if so it is very likely that the person who did the swap didnt put the right pin back in the linkage becausethat thing is a bitch to put back in. If it has the right pin and your shifter still has play when in gear you probably need new bushings, or you could just buy a whole shift linkage which you can get from someone on here for around $50.. just go under the car and look at the back of the tranny and there will be 2 rods that connect to the back of the tranny that runs up the middle of the car where your shifter comes through in the floor. there are 2 places where it attaches to the tranny but there is only bushing on one rod, check it and see if the bushing is dry rotted or not. and the other one is at the other end of the linkage right under the shifter itself, make sure that one isnt dry rotted or has any play either... if they arent dry rotted or dont have any play, the other rod that connects to the tranny has a circle clip around the rod, if you remove that there should be a little cylinder shaped "pin" holding that rod to the tranny. if the pin falls right out its not the correct pin but if it is in there and has no play at all and it feels "impossible" to get out it is probably the right one.. check all of this and then let us know if the problem still presists
