ok so, im a lil noob to the honda game. more like brett favre of honda lol. had an old DA back in around '03. been out the game since. so anyway i got an EK coupe now n im lookin to do a lil upgrade. ive read up on some swaps n what not but im a believer of building what you got. so shes a 96 non v-tec. im lookin into a stock head (y7?) with a v-tec block (y8?) and an si tranny. how would this lil equation work out performance wise? and secondly what whould i need to a successfull build?...aside from the obvious (ex., block, head, tranny) thanks in advance

just out of curiousity why would you want the non vtec head on the vtec block? i think you should do the vtec head on the non vtec block (mini me) with the si tranny, that would be a better upgrade unless theres a reason why you like the non vtec over vtec..

non vtec is nice but the y8 has oiling issues and like to spin berings i would built the y7. or swap out the bottom end for a better one. like a z6 or maybe even a a6 but there will be work to be done if you go that way

y8 block is fone as long as you shim and port the oil pump. i was making 293whp on a built y8 motor in my 94 hatch in 03.

        i would use the ex/si tranny and a full d16z6 motor with a obd2-1 convo harness and a obd1 p28ecu

there is no inspection but you will have to pass emission and you wont with a conversion to obd1 but you will have to convert to obd1 if you want to tune it at all you can really tune obd2 at all.

the z6 is a sohc vtec motor the ZC is the twin cam no vtec motor

there is plently of aftermarket to built what you want just some is harder to get then others. the d16z6 came in the 92 to 95 civic EX/SI.

you really can do anythign you want you can build what you have now so it jsut plugs rigth back in the car.

if you go with a different motor you will need to do some more work to make it work in your car.

you can use you stock motor build it and tune it with a obd1 conversion harness and when it is emission time put you stock injectors, dizzy, and ecu back in and go threw emissions.

obd2-1 convo doesnt require a distributor change frank.

just get a y8 longblock and a conversion harness. this isnt a big debate.

or roll the y7 and put a y8 intake mani on it and forget about it,
