i have a d16a6 in my 89 crx si..just got the car like 2 weeks ago..previous owner said it sounded like it had a cam because the way it idled..when i got the car it "needed a starter" but that turned into just the battery being dead and not having power to start the car...well the previous owner just popstarted the car all the time..he drove it 4 hours to me..and the car ran fine..i drove the car next day after fixing the problem and it ran really hard for being 1.6 non vtec..well 2 days later go to start the car and its idleing wierd.blowing smoke out of the vc vent.and there is just soo much pressure in the VC..so i cleaned the pcv thats fine..my oil is all good..i checked timing and its off 1-2 teeth
so my question is do you think its the timing being off that is causing this problem??

basically car smoked out VC vent.has alot of pressure in the VC.pcv is clean.oil is clean.car idles real rough like its on a cam..would the timing being off cause this??? im just wondering before i go buy a timing belt and that not even be a possibility...
other things were maybe fried rings.bad valve seals.and what other problems could it be??

also dizzy timing was all the way to the radiator so i think that made up for the idle problems..cuz it only started idleing bad when i put it back to normal

timing issue isnt gona cause that i could be wrong but i really doubt it if its smoking its usually rings or valve seals

Any codes? Your timing belt may have slipped or someone did a timing belt job and f'd it up seeing how the car would run ok with timing retarted/advanced and like crap when it was set properly. Also you may have a clogged/broken pcv causing your valve cover to pressurize...or bad rings. I would do a compression test and start with cylinder #3

the timing belt is old..i know for a fact that it jumped 1-2 teeth..
i cleaned the pcv out and its working fine..i dont want to do a compression test and risk bending the valves(if they arent already) so i think im just going to put a vtec head on and hope its not the rings...someone said maybe valve seals???
the thing is the smoke coming out smells real strong like gas so i think its the head

Could be the valve seals...maybe a leak down test is in order? That could help figgure that one out, could a leakdown test damage valves also?

After thinking about it your seals may very well be bad if you are pressurizing your valve cover and it smells strongly of gas, does your oil smell equally as strong?

i dont think so because you dont have to turn the motor over for leakdown..im going to smell the oil right now and let everyone know..i rlly hope its just valve seals..cuz i can just swap the head

Just use the old timing belt, & Time the car correctly, then see where your at. The timing being off would def. cause the car to sound like it had a cam & idle/run shitty.

Your intake valves are most likely opened on your compression stroke, due to the timing being off, which pushes sylinder pressure by the valves, into the intake, then threw the PCV system, & into the block/engine.

Bottom line: Dont go & buy parts blindly, Diagnois your problem, so you dont create more.

thank you..this is the same idea/theory i had..but everyone i talked to had me convince that it was rings/or valve seals

Oh, well dont get it twisted, its a 89 D16A6, that you & plenty of other people beat on, so I wouldn't doubt it needs Rings & seals anyway, but from your problem description, I would start with the timing.
