I've heard of putting a new mint head on old rings that didn't smoke b4 due to older more crap head making it smoke because of the new compression

x2 anything block , head, or tranny I always get inspected and checked out before putting it in my car .. Unless it's a real close friend of mines.. Because it's not worth twice the work in the end
