  • i have questions about apexi vtec controllers

I have a jdm b16 in a eg hatch light mods full exhaust intake aem rail walboro 255 mounts blah blah and an apexi vtec controller i have just figured out how to set my vtec points and currently have it set at 4500rpm etc my question is are these bad for the motor? ive never owned an apexi vtec controller and havnt really played with any of the other options with it just mainly adjusted the vtec point any advice would be greatly appreciated

They basically just give the computer a false signal to make it think it's running rich or needs to change timing etc. Usually they lean cars out if you don't tune it right and the computer will basically fight back and change its fuel maps based on the false readings. I had one on a jdm gsr and my car pre ignited and overheated like it was it's job. I took it out and the car never had another issue. Also there is absolutely no benefit to lowering your vtec point without getting a proper tune. You'll run lean until 5800rpm where the computer will adjust the fuel because that's where it thinks vtec is supposed to be switching over
