Help!

Ok im a little lost my buddies car has no thermostat and it takes forever to warm up but when it does it blows hot air. The other day it started smoking smelled like something burning but blowing cold air only then the needle would read that it's overheating but once the heat was turned on the needle would drop down instantly... Also when deceleration the car sounds like it back fires. Anyone know what the issue or issues could be lmk thanks

head gasket sounds like coolant is getting into the plugs
