White Smoke

I have a cel for my cat. I noticed that I am blowing white smoke out of my exhaust. From what I have read this could indicate a blown head gasket.

This is what I checked so far. Start it up.... white smoke. let it run for some time and a little water spraying out of exhaust. Checked antifreeze a little low but I havent put any in in a year. I filled it to max location. Checked oil looks ok ie I dont think i see any coolant in there. Looked under oil cap looks ok as well. I drove it for about 20 min and I dont seem to see the white smoke anymore. I rechecked everything and all looks the same.

Is it possible that this could be just normal condensation in the exhaust and once warmed up it goes away.

I will change my cat first since the cel is on for it.

Are you missing any oil?

Since I have owned the car I burn oil. It seems to be burning at its normal rate or 1 qt every 4-6 weeks.

cat is probably shot cause i put a test pipe on my car and the car started throwing white smoke ... sooo thats just my 2 cents

Today I checked the coolant level and it seems about 1/8" lower than when I filled it a day ago. Tomorrow I go to work so I'll drive a bit more and take a peek.

take out a spark plug to see what it looks like ...

I pulled the plugs and they look all good. For now I will keep checking the level of coolant and assume its the cat unless I notice anything else. Thanks for the help

it is cold out was it doing it during the summer months cause it might be condensation

It could be minor leak in your head gasket. From what i got it only happens when it's cold, But when the car warms up it stops smokin, right? this could be because when the engines cold, everything is slightly smaller, So you could have a minor leak from the coolant jacket into the cylinder. But when the car warms up, everything expands and seals back up again. Just a theory, but makes sence, and is quite possible.

Have you smelt rotten egg while your driving around when the CEL popped up?
Because that's the smell a Cat makes before it goes bad. And when a cat goes bad it doesn't ussually open up. It clogges up. unless you banged out, or hollowed out your cat. All the CEL for the cat is goin off of is 02 sensors. The CEL might be thrown up from a Faulty O2.

It could possibly be a faulty o2 they would also throw a 420 right? I havent seen my coolant level drop any so for now i'm hoping that the gasket is ok. Also the cel comes on only when the car has been driven a good distance. over 25 miles.

I have had a cat clog up before and it was slow as ************ once it did. So far I have not felt that effect. Next time i'm under there I will bang it softly to see if i hear anything rattle inside.

BTW do you really have a Honda tattoo.... thats hard core love for hondas lol I never thought about getting anything car related but some engine internals may make be a cool tattoo.

Yea, it could be the 02 throwing that code aswell. Do a pressure test on your coolant system, with the car cold. That should tell you if you got a leakin head gasket before the engine warms up.

Yea, it blows. to much back pressure. Chokes out the engine. But i'v never heard of cats goin bad and blowin out to make a straight pipe, you know? unless someone banged out the cat or got it balls hot an hit the bottom of it with a hammer and then reved the ************ out of it to blow the pieces out.

Lol, yea It's really mine. I got it over a year ago. Honda's always gona be a part of my life, even if i grow towards another company, I'l always have a love for hondas and it's been the only cars i'v owned since i got my liscence. So it's a part of my life. ya know? I'm tryin to think of an automotive sleeve but it aint easy to plan that much space out.
But engine internals would definitly make a cool looking tattoo if done right. It's a good idea, find a good artist and good luck man.
