  • High Compression or Cams?

    I have a Stock B18B , I was thinking of either going with High compression Piston heads , or cam shafts , I plan on staying all motor , just not sure which is worth it , if either , also are cam gears and light weight pulleys any good or only with other mods? lmk guys thanks.

    tony my friend. you cannot just toss cams in and go. you'd need an upgraded valve train! springs, retainers, ect. your best bet to give it a little bit more go is grab a gsr head and convert your motor to ls vtec. its very simple and about $500 to do. then later on down the line you can go springs, retainers and cams with a tune and the car will go a little faster. then later on in life you do high compression pistons 12:5:1 and really scoot all motor.
    Honda sucks. Over priced junk.

        yeah i know the cams say it requires spring kit , its about $500 , and the pistons are about $500 , only reason i didnt want to go v-tec is bc my car is automatic and i dont want some jimmy rigged ECU thats not reliable , idk i have alot to think of lol.

            Start with the least expensive things and work your way up. Your basic formula is:
            More Air + More Fuel = more power

            For Air, research the following areas:
            Air Filter Element
            Intake pipe diameter and length
            TB – Ported OEM or Aftermarket
            Intake Manifold – Portmatched, Runner Length and Diameter

            Focus on how to get that cold air to the engine:
            Location of air filter element
            Wrap intake piping
            Ceramic Coat TB and Intake Manifold
            Intake Manifold Gasket

            For Fuel:
            Injector size
            Fuel Cooler?
            Engine Management

            Then address exhaust:
            Header – Diameter, length (IMPORTANT)
            It's been proven that the warmer the temperature of the piping, the flow of the exhaust gases is increased. Therefore, look to ceramic coat or wrap your complete exhaust system. However, keep in mind you can't have it too hot as it will reek havoc on your welds.

            Don’t expect HUGE gains with the above items, but like everything else in life you need a solid foundation from which you can begin your build from. Oh and another thing, look at how your going to get the power to the wheels!
            Tires. Let me say that again…. TIRES!
            Motor Mounts – The Main reduction of Wheel Hop is done here. Don’t look at Urethane. They require a lot of maintenance (regrease) and under perform with fatigue stresses. Look to hardened plastics.
            Braces/traction bars – to further reduce wheel hop. Do not install an Engine Torque Damper. They are Garbage.

            Send you head to a facility that has access to a Flow Bench. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
            Next, pick your Valve: Oversized, Stock, Flat, Dish.
            Decide how your going to rework the valves so they seat properly
            Pick your Cam
            Based on your Cam, decide on your valvetrain components: Retainers, Keepers, Spring, Seals, Spring Seats. Avoid Titanium parts as it has been proven that although they are stonger and lighter than their Steel counterpart, their life is significantly less. Send your oil after changing it to get analyzed and it’ll show titanium at an above normal amount in the report.

              Thanks Kerby , i have new tires and motor mounts , cold air intake , edelbrock headers , i would do all the little things just wondering if i should go cams or pistons , or just go turbo low psi? idk money is a issue but not the only one i just want it to be reliable.

                  Don't believe the low compression to run turbo idea.

                  With the available engine management options available now (Hondata, Chrome, Neptune... to name a few) and with a competent tuner, you will be happier than a tornado in a trailer park.

                    well i can do the thicker head gasket and the motor is pretty low compression as it is. just dont know if it will be good for a daily driver.
