starter problems

Sometimes my car won't start then I pop the hood grab a hammer and lay a lil bang bang on the starter and get back in the car and bam car starts. Does this mean my starter is going bad suld I get a new one or take it out clean it alil give it a little TLC or what? Its been happening more frequently now than b4 lmk thanks
