  • What Parts Are Needed To Put GSR Motor Into 1998 Civic

I'm planning a motor swap this winter since I'll have some extra money and I've been wanting to go B-series for the year that I've owned my car and now that I did the 99-00 front end conversion I'm thinking it's time I finally start putting some work into my stock Civic and give it a little bit of power. My car is currently an automatic so I'll also be having an auto to manual swap done at the same time. I want to do the swap myself but I know I don't have the means to do it where I live and technically in our lease you're not supposed to work on your car in the driveway (I live in an apartment complex) so some asshole would end up calling the housing people on me and I'd get in trouble. Because of that I'm going to have a shop do it for me. I called Swift Motorsports and they quoted $2000 just to do a mini me swap and if they're charging that much for a simple head swap they'd probably charge like $5000 to put a motor in. I called EST Motorsports because they seem to get a good rap on here and the pictures I've seen of their work on the site looks awesome. The owner (I can't remember his name) quoted me a rough price that was actually really fair. When he first said it I thought he was joking since I had just got off the phone with Swift and had heard their prices. Because of that I'm most likely going to take it to EST, although I haven't talked with them in person yet, I only just got a rough estimate over the phone.

Anyway I plan on getting my motor from hmotorsonline and they told me they can give me a complete 1998 GSR motor swap for about $3000 shipped to my door. As long as everything works out right I should be ordering the motor at the end of the month.

Here's where my question comes in. I've been doing tons of researching trying to find a good guide that lists everything needed for the swap but I can't find one. Here's the parts the engine comes with and the parts I know I need so can anyone else add to that list any other parts I would need to buy to complete the swap? I added some of the parts needed for the auto to manual conversion (they're in red) but I'm not sure what else I would need for that so if someone could make me a list of what's needed for that it'd be greatly appreciated.

Here's what comes with the engine or I know I already need. The stuff in blue is what comes with the motor from hmotorsonline...

    - Motor
    - Hydraulic Tranny (S80, Y80) - I'm thinking of getting the LSD since I eventually want to go turbo
    - ECU (P72)
    - Axles with Half Shaft
    - Shift Linkage
    - Stock Motor Mounts - I'll probably by the Hasport ones again because I want to eventually turbo it and I'd rather have stronger ones already plus it's easier to replace them when the motors out then to pull it out again just to put in new motor mounts.
    - Alternator
    - Starter
    - Clutch
    - Flywheel
    - Intake Manifold
    - Exhaust Manifold
    - Fuel Rail
    - Injectors
    - Distributor
    - Engine Harness
    - Comes With All Sensors Needed

    - T bracket motor mount
    - Header - probably go with an ITR header or an aftermarket one
    - Exhaust - haven't decided on what one yet, welcome to recommendations :)
    - Throttle cable
    - Manual foot pedals
    - Manual shifter

I'll probably replace the gaskets and stuff like that just to be safe and I want to put the red ITR valve cover on for looks or maybe I'll just save money and paint mine but is there anything else besides what's listed there that I need to put a 1998 JDM GSR motor into my 1998 Civic DX? If HMO has a USDM motor I will probably get that. Would there be any difference swapping the USDM vs. the JDM motor or would one be easier then the other? I also need the car to pass emissions eventually so that's why I figured if they have a USDM one I'd get that one.

Also if someone could list what's needed for the auto to manual conversion too that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

When you swap the motor you will have to wire in vtec and the presure sensor. I no some jdm motors dont come with the sensor and if it does just swap the solenoid.
Also with the GSR motor you will have to wire in the IAB's( the secondary butterflys in the intake manifold)

You will also need the clutch master cylinder and the slave. I have it if you need it or dont have it.

As for emmisions just run the cat from the gsr integra. the stock d series might have too much back pressure and restrict the motor.

You have no idea how much googling I've done. There's no good guide or posts on any forum that just straight up lists the parts needed for the swap. I posted this thread on Honda-Tech and it got like 80 views but no responses so I figured I'd have better luck on here since it seems like a smaller community and better.

I knew about wiring in vtec and the pressure sensor but I didn't know about the IAB's. Thanks for that!

I do need a clutch master cylinder and slave. I planned on getting one from the junkyard but if you have one you want to get rid of how much would you want for it? I could pick it up this week or this weekend if you're free.

As for the cat I figured the d series one wouldn't work. My friend Colton that told me about the site has a high flow cat for sale that he doesn't need. Would that work good with an aftermarket exhaust system and allow me to pass emissions?

As for the cat the aftermarket one will work. Just make sure your flanges match up.

And make sure your evap system is hooked up so you dont throw a code. any check engine light will make you fail emmisions automaticly.

That's what I figured. I forget what size they are. I have to check with him.

I plan on having EST Motorsports install the engine since I can't do it at my house so I'm sure they'll take care of that for me.

Thanks for all the help man!

I could see how my post could come off that way and I hate people like that myself.

Trust me I've done as much research as possible. Half the time I spend my days in class on my phone looking for info on doing the swap or searching for parts or whatever. Since I'm buying all of the parts myself and then giving them to the shop to install I want to make sure I have a good complete list of everything needed so I buy the right stuff and they don't have to stop what they're doing to go buy a part I forgot. I figure that way it'll get done faster and I'll have my car back sooner.

                    Thanks man.

I wish I could do the swap myself at home because I really want the experience and to learn how to do it and I know that it's not that hard to do but because of where I live it's just not possible.

I haven't talked with EST that much except for the time I called and asked for a quote on the swap price but I'm hoping they'll let me help a little or at least be there for when they drop the motor in and do the wiring because those are the 2 parts I care the most about, especially the wiring because that's what I know the least about.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to come out strong in '11. That's my plan! I need the end of this month and next month to come so I'll have some money and I'll be able to buy my motor and all of the parts I need for the swap then I need January to come so my school will give me the $5000 I got coming to me so I can get some engine parts and a turbo kit.
