  • timign off???

So my timing belt broke while I was coming of a red light...I put a new belt on and I'm pretty sure I got the timing right but when I try to start it, it sounds like its whinding up or sumthing and it backfires to, not sure why...any1 have any ideas??

Out of timing sounds right. Did you put the two lines on the cams together?

Did you put the harmonic balancer on timing on the bottom?

i would try pulling it off and resetting timing completely, if that doesnt work i would check into gettin the valves looked at

Make sure the firing order is correct.

You probably bent valves. Or just like the last guy said, check the firing order, backfires happen when it is off.
You need to do a leakdown with a leakdown gauge and air compressor, not a compression test.(if possible)
You can still get decent readings on compression tests with bent valves.

(This isnt directed at you because I'm not sure how you did it, this is just for the guy's who might not know)
You need to make sure the # 1 piston is at TDC (top dead center) when you install the new belt, you also need to make sure the cams are in the correct rotation, this means you not only line up the line's on the cam gear but you also need to make sure the cam gear's up mark is actually up.(if using oem cams you can use the pin/center punch holding method)
I have also seen guy's leave too much slack in the belt in between the crank pully gear and the exhaust cam, so when they pull the pin/center punch out thats holding the cams at TDC ,the crank spins to remove the slack, this will put you off a tooth at the crank.
