  • ls vtec question headbolts

i got a serious question.. why is it reccomended that you upgrade to arp headbolts for ls vtec.. what happens if you dont??? wat is wrong with stock gsr headbolts... i just wanna kno som of yall personal experiences..

nothing its just some say they are torque to yield bolts...i'm not sure if they are haven't gotten the full facts on it but i've seen stockers reused alot and never had a head gasket prob. but you do need the gsr bolts min. anyways.as far as ls bottom ends they are strong but you should use arp rod bolts cuz the stock ones are weak and stretch at high rpm which is why u've seen so many holes in ls blocks. more questions just ask

you need to replace the rods bolts as He^^^ said they are very weak and can't take the stress of revving to 8k head bolts ppl replace because they are a cheap investment to makeing your ls/v more reliable

could not have said it better...ive seen and used stock GSR headstuds on several lsv setups but those bolts were new...and time any STOCK headstud is torqued once they stretch

you can be able to change the rods bolts by just dropping the oil pan? not taking off the head?

Wrong, you can do rod bolts with an air chisel. They come right out without moving the piston or anything. You seat the new rod bolts by torquing them down. Simple as that.

i would suggest doing the rods defiantly ... i didnt and look at me spun a bearing in my second motor for the second time two nights ago. for my head i didnt read up and i used my ls head bolts that had been used with a ls head gasket change and then the vtec swap... Was so bad that they barley torqued and before i took my car out for the test drive it leaked all my coolent and had to redo the head gasket again... used gsr head studs and they work just fine

You don't need to do the rods. You should be perfectly fine as long as you do ARP rod bolts and ARP head studs. The LS rod bolts are what 'cause rod bearings to spin when going LS/VTEC because they're weak and can't handle revving higher than the stock rev limit. If you want to do the rods, you can have a machine shop shot peen them. It costs like $150 but like I said, there's really no need to do that.

wrong, you can not install rod bolts while the complete rotating assembly is intact in the block...i would LOVE to see step by step pics of this

x2, done that before no problem.

                          Like this guy said...

                          Arp Head Studs
                          Arp Rod Bolts
And DON'T forget to use dowl pins. (LS/GSR ones are differ) You need ones for LS/V.

yea. it's easier to just buy the golden eagle ls/v kit that includes everything. But judging by this guys other threads he's gonna go to home depot or autozone put together his own kit. And he wont use dowel pins.
