  • crank/rod/bearings questions.

so im gonna be building a ls vtec. bought the ls block from my boy for 20 bucks. it had a spun bearing his lost i guess. so i am going to bring the crank and rods and bearings to a machine shop, to all have machined to what they need to be, and the bearings and everything matched. just my question is should i buy and bring them stock bearings, or bigger? or smaller? or just ask them?? i am also gonna have them clean up the pistons and everything cause there coming out of my b16 block. yes i will have all new bearings rings and seals and etc.

my set up is gonna be stock ls rods, with p30 pistons, on b18 crank in b18 block. with b16 head, with stock cams and everything else. along with my b16(obd1) oil and water pump.

i will be also running an oil pressure and oil temp gauge.

i was reading/told by someone i need to do something with the fuel if running stock unchiped ecu on stock injectors and fuel rail? anyone know what i should do. I DO NOT HAVE 500 FOR JUST THE S300 PLUS COST OF TUNE. that will be down the road. my ecu is the P30 its numbers/code is 37820-P30-000-470-107563 ASH pretty sure its just the JDM P30 correct me if im wrong.

alll criticism is accepted. and why im doing this with both a ls and b16 motor sitting around is not needed to know its something stupid dont ask.

i personally NEVER reuse cranks that have had a spun bearing or needs to be cut. and make sure your oil pump is new and not reused...trust me you'll regret that. and get the pistons 81.5mm oversize because your cylinder walls are probably out of round and that will eliminate any imperfections within the cylinder walls.

and your stock fuel pump, injectors, rail are just fine...i would get an aftermarket regulator and guage to monitor your fuel flow. after the motor is built let it run for about 15-20 min, drop oil to remove any shavings then have it towed to dyno and your tuner will break it in on the dyno as well as tune it.(highly recommended)

so im getting a crank that does not have a spun bearing. and i was gonna get the block honed. so do i really need the slight oversize?/does that mean a slight bore is neccisary. and i am getting new oil and water pump, along with new p30 pistons.

yes I HIGHLY recommend it...i garuntee there is a 99% chance that your cylinders are out of round

so i had some chip questions im running a P30 and would like to keep it with ls vtec. beacuse i feel that would be best for the b16 head. and i would like to chip it. i wanted to go with hondata. but apparenttly they stoped making the s200. and that was what i thought would always be perfect for me. and i dont wana shell out 500 for a chip, unless im boosting. so what i want to know is what would be comparable to the hondata s200, or would the s100 be good enough. i want to remove/adjust limiters. be able the change fuel/air maps. adjust vtec settings. i DONT need a launch control. i can hold the rpms myself. basicly want to be able to tune a all motor set up without paying for unnesecary things like luanch control or any of those things.

check out http://phearable.net/ for ecu chipping etc, if your revving the ls bottem end past 7200 stock limiter you need a girdle. they arent made to be revved that high. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KMS-B...Q5fAccessories
also please do yourself a favor and go over sized pistons, trust me i didn't and ended up with piston slap on my brand new built motor... well guess what it all has to be re-done i wasted alot of money because of that. dont make the same mistake do it right the first time around and you'll be good. good luck

has anyone used there pre chipped ecu? how good are they/reliability? and how tuneable are they in the future?

also if i use the block griddle? doesnt the b16 have one? if so can i use that one...if not and i have to purchase a new one, can i use all the stock ls bolts and stuff..if not what do i need to order.
lastly with that can i rev to 8k safely. with the 81.5 pistons. and bore i guess. and ls rods. on stock head for now. head will be built up later down the road. i just want to have the bottom end good now that will be safe and reliable for a while.

dont install a girdle that would reguire an aligne hone/boring the main journals and is unnessecary,,just buy arp rod bolts and have the rods balanced at ur machine shop,,, have the machine shop inspect the crank ,check the condition of the cylinder walls,,and call it a dayy,,ive built 2 lsvtec's in my personal cars and i just use arp main studs theres no need for a girlde,,not bashin any1 either just puttin my 02.
                          theres no replacment for boost:)

i want to be able to basicly have my redline set at 8k. so i wouldnt bring it past like 7800 and i would shift around 7500-7600. and can anyone else besides mark11017 can vouch for those pre chipped ecu's?? from above.

dont worry about "revving" your tuner will decide where you stop making power at...and that would be your shift point. and pre-chipped ecu's are garbage. AGAIN...after motor is rebuilt HAVE IT TUNED!!!! your tuner can provide you with a program like crome, and he can also break it in on the dyno
